What Size Dumpster do I Need?
Renting a dumpster can feel overwhelming—and the wrong choice could cost you hundreds. This guide is here to answer your questions and help you avoid common mistakes when renting a dumpster.
Featured Provider
Mauriello Disposal provides fast, affordable dumpster rental services across Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, and Union Counties in New Jersey. Whether for your home or business, we make the rental process quick, easy, and hassle-free.
Here are a few simple steps to get things going...
Step 1: Sell or Donate First
Before renting a dumpster, consider holding a garage sale or donating items. Anything you sell or give away is something you don’t have to pay to dispose of. You can also list usable items for free on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or local community groups.
Step 2: Estimate Trash Volume
Consolidate your trash into as few piles as possible to get an accurate sense of how much you have—spread-out debris can be deceiving.
Pro Tip: It’s better to overestimate. Renting a slightly larger dumpster is far more cost-effective than needing a second one later.
Step 3: Do Your Research
Before booking, research dumpster rental companies. Read Google reviews, compare quotes, and make sure the company is NJDEP licensed. Save time—Mauriello Disposal has been NJ’s trusted choice since 1912.
Note: Check with your town about permits—some, like Cedar Grove and Little Falls, require them even for driveways. Minimize your rental period to avoid extra weight from rain or snow.
Step 4: Order your dumpster
When booking your dumpster rental, inform the company about any overhead wires, low branches, or driveway slopes. Be clear about your placement preferences and let them know if you’ll need to use the rear-swinging dumpster door, which requires at least 8 feet of clearance behind the unit.
You don’t need to be home for delivery—80% of our customers aren’t—as long as the driveway is clear. If you’re concerned about potential driveway damage, place wooden planks (at least 3 feet long and 1 foot wide) under the dumpster wheels for added protection.
Step 5: Loading your dumpster
Load the dumpster strategically to maximize available space. Avoid loading debris above the top edge of the dumpster. Once the dumpster is about 90% full, be sure to close and secure the rear door to prevent any difficulty closing it later.
Step 6: Schedule the pickup
Schedule your pickup once you’ve finished loading the dumpster. Make sure the driveway is clear again when the hauler arrives to ensure safe and easy access.
Dumpsters have weight limits because haulers pay by the ton to dispose of debris. We offer lower rates with lower limits—so you only pay more if you go over. Always request a weight ticket if charged for excess weight.

Waste removal FAQs
Why does my dumpster rental come with a weight limit?
It is necessary for a dumpster rental to come with a weight limit because trash is dumped by the ton in New Jersey. Accordingly, the hauler that rents you the dumpster does not know what his dumping cost is until after he dumps. Read more in our blog post: Why does my dumpster rental come with a weight limit?
